Garden Tips & Tricks

Quick tips to save money, time, and get better garden results.

Money-Saving Tips

Bulk vs Bags

For any project needing more than 1 cubic meter (about 20 bags), bulk delivery is 30-50% cheaper than buying bags. Call local suppliers for quotes before choosing.

Make Your Own Compost

Kitchen scraps and yard waste become free fertilizer in 2-3 months. A small compost bin can save you $200+ per year on commercial compost.

Buy at the Right Time

Garden material prices drop 20-30% in late fall and early spring. Suppliers want to clear inventory before winter, so bargain hunters save big.

Share Delivery Costs

Delivery fees are often $50-150 regardless of order size. Coordinate with neighbors to split the fee and order together.

Time-Saving Tips

Calculate Twice, Order Once

Use our weight calculator before every project. One wrong calculation can mean hours wasted on reorders.

Prep Your Site First

Do not schedule delivery until your area is ready. Clear the space, measure twice, and ensure access for the delivery vehicle.

Use Tarps for Organization

Place tarps where materials will be dumped. Makes cleanup 10x faster and prevents grass damage from heavy piles.

Quality Tips

Check Material Before Delivery

Ask to see samples of bulk deliveries before accepting. Low-quality topsoil can contain rocks, weeds, or contaminants.

Smell Test for Compost

Good compost smells earthy and sweet. Bad compost smells like ammonia or rotten eggs. Reject bad compost — it will damage your plants.

Measure Wet vs Dry

Suppliers sometimes sell wet materials as "extra heavy" to charge more. Wet topsoil can be 20% heavier than dry. Always confirm weight at pickup.

Seasonal Tips

Spring (March-May)

  • Best time to amend soil with compost
  • Apply 7cm mulch for moisture retention
  • Plant cool-season vegetables in amended beds
  • Check drainage before heavy spring rains

Summer (June-August)

  • Top up mulch that has thinned or washed away
  • Add compost tea for mid-season nutrient boost
  • Avoid major soil work during extreme heat
  • Mulch around vegetables to reduce watering needs

Fall (September-November)

  • Best time for bulk orders — prices drop
  • Apply 10cm mulch for winter insulation
  • Mix compost into beds before winter
  • Plant cover crops in bare soil

Winter (December-February)

  • Plan next seasons projects
  • Calculate material needs using our tools
  • Order early for spring delivery discounts
  • Protect existing mulch from heavy snow

Safety Tips

Lifting Heavy Materials

A 40kg bag of soil is heavy. Lift with your legs, not your back. Use a wheelbarrow or cart for distances over 5 meters. Consider rental equipment for very large projects.

Handling Mulch and Soil

Wear gloves to prevent skin irritation. Dust masks for dry materials. Some mulches can harbor fungus — avoid breathing in particles from old mulch piles.

Driveway Protection

Heavy bulk deliveries can crack driveways. Ask delivery trucks to stay on the street and use wheelbarrows to move material. Or use plywood sheets as protection.

Calculation Hacks

Quick Mental Math

For quick estimates: 1 cubic meter of most soil = about 1 pickup truck bed. 1 yard of material = about 700kg average weight.

Adding Safety Margin

Always add 10% to calculations. For uneven ground or complex shapes, add 15-20%. You can always use extra but running short mid-project is costly.

Circular Area Trick

For round beds, multiply diameter × diameter × 0.785 to get area. Our calculator handles this automatically if you enter the diameter as both length and width, divided by 2.
